Art of possibilty

There was a mega-assembly at school today. First, the after-school African drumming club performed. They range in age from 5 to 14 and played brilliantly together. Then we all sang "Lean on Me". And then the Girl's class presented a series of comedy skits loosely based on legends of the Greek gods. They were pretty funny. The Girl had a speaking part in one which she'd co-written - "Medusa Makeover", in which Medusa visits Aphrodite's beauty parlour for some serious work on those snakey locks.

This evening I've been attending an art auction organised by my friends at the local Middle School - the kids who helped out at my recent Fair Trade Chocolate event. The artwork on sale tonight, for just a few dollars apiece, was all made by children from around the world - the school has contacts with them through a website. So there were drawings from Costa Rica, paintings from Russia, embroidery from Bangladesh, illustrated Irish blessings, manga cartoons from Japan... I was particularly taken by several pastel illustrations of village scenes from India. It was an amazing international effort. The nearly $1,000 raised will go towards an orphanage being built in Uganda.
