Birthday bash

We were invited to a birthday pool party this afternoon, but constant drizzle and a chill in the air didn't make the water look that inviting. The kids weren't put off, however, and they had a good time splashing around.

The activities moved indoors, or at least into a barn-loft - the hosts live on an old farm. There was a den made out of hay bales to play in and scramble over, and chickens to chase. A pinata was suspended from a roof beam, until the children managed to smash it down (they started with a stick, but ultimately did the business with a baseball bat). More hay bales were laid out as benches for cake-eating when the time came for that. Then the kids ran off into the woods to play.

It was pretty idyllic, all in all.

It looks like there'll be lots more rain in the week ahead - great for the garden, but not best vacation weather, alas. Time to come up with some creative crafty projects, maybe.
