This evening I went to see a very brief performance by the Girl's Irish step-dancing class. Just one routine that they've been practising for only four lessons, to music by The Chieftains.
All the girls danced well. I was happy to see my Girl performing in a group effort for a change, as nearly all her skating is solo. Some of the skills of step-dancing apply well to skating - good posture and nifty footwork for a start. However the armwork is completely incompatable. How you position and move your arms in skating is surprisingly significant (it's all about balance). The girl occasionally forgets this and then her skating coach jokes that she's doing "Irish skating" - arms pinned to her sides.
Riverdance on Ice? Ain't gonna happen.
