Getting into (onto?) a new field

This evening I was at a meeting to discuss fundraising ideas for the school in Dominican Republic that I've mentioned before.  My head is spinning after so much talking.  I'm now a bit concerned that I somehow ended up "volunteering" to help organise a soccer tournament.

It's not my area of expertise at all!  Can anyone share any useful advice?  This being America, you can bet your life it's not going to be some jumpers-for-goalposts-type casual affair - people take their recreational sports very seriously over here (especially when kids are involved).  And will they also expect motorcycling hotdogs and an Uncle Sam on stilts?  Or is that just for baseball?

Yikes - this is all scary new territory...
