The Man writes...the train to New York City adopts a leisurely pace - 140 miles in 2.5 hours - but the views of the Hudson River (or strictly, fjord) are constantly diverting. 
During the journey on Monday I persuaded The Visitor, a lead author on the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), to take me over the talk he was to give at Princeton on Global Sea Level Rise. This was quite a privilege. The technology is awe-inspiring (did you know a satellite 1000 kilometres up can measure sea level to an accuracy of 3cm?), the science is complex and currently the uncertainties in the future levels are large, but the implications could hardly be more profond.Later we had a fine lunch overlooking the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, further poignant reminders of how privileged we are.
I'm glad to say that my train journey on Monday was a bit faster
