We even had a visit from a local TV news station, interested to tell a different Black Friday story from the usual crowds-at-the-mall report.
It could have been a wholly positive, good news piece about how sales of the fair trade products at our market are positively impacting the lives of some of the world's most disadvantaged people. Instead the reporter chose to focus on an emerging controversy that mainly concerns fair trade coffee certification (and not FT crafts at all). She was probably inspired by this article. If you read the article carefully you'll appreciate that it's a very complex issue. Alas, a one-minute TV report doesn't allow for too much complexity. Still, I'm hoping enough viewers will see past an implied message that "you can't trust fair trade" and come to our market anyway.
Better be talked about than not - good luck with the FT project
