In the UK there's a Fairtrade Fortnight in the spring, but over here there's a whole Fair Trade Month and it's celebrated in October. I've got various projects lined up, so I spent the morning working towards those, and part of the afternoon executing the first of them - a presentation to a group at the local Middle School.
Chocolate was involved, so needless to say it went down well. But I think the kids were pretty engaged with the topic anyway - how to make life fairer for cocoa farmers, and how to get child slaves out of the chocolate equation altogether.
This afternoon my son, fast-tracking in his ambition to become an inventor, created a unique gadget. He wears it on a string around his neck. It's a small homemade box, fitted with a battery-powered buzzer made from odds and ends from Radio Shack and a switch made out of aluminium foil. He put it together all by himself, having remembered all his electricity facts - his 3rd Grade teacher would be so proud of him!
Well, sort of... It's his own personal expletive deleter. It comes in very handy when he wants to complain, for example, that the chapters in his reading book are beeeep long.
