After a morning swimming, boating, shopping and generally hanging around Mirror Lake and the town of Lake Placid, we took another scenic drive (turns out there's quite a bit of scenery to look at in a six million acre park) down to Blue Mountain Lake.
There we found the Adirondack Museum, in a very pretty setting beside the lake. The museum is a mixture of galleries displaying items associated with the Adirondacks (boats, for example) and transplanted buildings - a one-roomed schoolhouse, a hunting lodge, an artist's cottage and so on - to look inside. There were plenty of examples of rustic furniture made from branches and bark, typical of the area - there was even a chair you could build yourself. There were lots of hands-on activities generally, from traditional children's games to kayaks and bobsleds you could sit in and a fire tower to climb.
The exhibits were interesting, the weather was unseasonably warm and lovely, and we all had fun...it just would have been that bit more perfect if someone had only warned us that the cafe closed at 4 o'clock.
