Berkshire Sunday

The Man writes...the small, pretty town of Lenox in the Berkshires is home to restaurants, retreats, and several cultural attractions like the Tanglewood open-air concert venue and the Shakespeare and Co theatre company. Already at 11 on a rainy Sunday morning it was busy with people gathering for a posh brunch and perhaps heading on to a concert. Police were on every corner guiding traffic, and there was barely a parking space to be had anywhere.

There was a long queue at the Haven Cafe, but the shiitake and spinach omelette and kale salad were well worth the wait. Afterwards we strolled around the craft market, admiring enormous gourd birdhouses, and visited some independent book shops.

Then we headed out to The Mount, Edith Wharton's house and garden. Of course Albaniana already described it better than I can. We took House and Garden tours, which were both excellently done.

I particularly liked the grass steps.

In the woods there was modern "sculpture", like a fishing net arranged artfully and on sale for $12000, and open-air Shakepeare was being energetically performed to a see of umbrellas as we departed.
