Like many schools, ours holds commercial Book Fairs from time to time. The kids get to pick from a selection of books and some of the proceeds go towards the school library. Like most parents I support these events, but somewhat through gritted teeth as the range of books isn't great (and my kids, like many, tend to home in on the TV tie-in rubbish rather than the few better quality choices), plus the books are supplemented by plastic toys and gew-gaws and we have quite enough of that kind of thing in our lives already thank you very much.
Anyway, a multiple-recipient email came my way today seeking volunteers to man the next book fair stall. It was soon followed by a strongly worded message from an irate parent who for a host of good reasons can stand this event no longer. There has subsequently been quite a blizzard of email activity as other parents (including the sender of the original volunteer-seeking message!) have chipped in with their own pent-up-for-years feelings of dissatisfaction with the whole book fair thing.
The upshot is there will be a meeting next month to explore the concept of 'ethical fund-raising'. I shall be there (surprise surprise - just call me 'Mrs Fund-Raising of Linton'), though if ethics are going to enter into it I'm afraid my little tombola is already dead in the water.
