Yesterday's paper quilt.
Until this evening it looked like my most exciting experience of the day would be playing Thomas and Friends Top Trumps with the Boy (I fell asleep mid-game). Then one of the Man's colleagues kindly drove him home from work and stopped for some dinner, so things brightened up considerably. J is a mine of information about American history, politics, sports and US life in general, and his company is always a pleasure.
But generally speaking it has been a rather quiet day, so I think it's time to roll out the Poughkeepsie story. Those who have heard this already may leave the room now (but please come back tomorrow!).
A few years ago when he was with a different company, the Man spent several months working near Poughkeepsie, a town between Albany and New York City.
Soon after he arrived he wandered into a Poughkeepsie fast food restaurant to grab a bite to eat, and while he was there asked the server, 'So how do you say the name of this place?'
The server looked him up and down, then leant across the counter and said, loudly and slowly,
'BUR-GER KING'.
