The kids' school is quite a small one, but it has a lot of land. At the moment only a small proportion of it is in regular use, but there's currently a scheme afoot to renovate some disused trails and open up new trails into the woodlands. It is going to require a lot of volunteer hours over the next few months (and probably, years). Work started today, and the Man and I joined the team.
There was chainsawing and machete-wielding to be done, but I stuck to raking. I worked hard, but it was pleasant enough as the weather was dry but not too hot, and anyway we were mostly under the shade of trees. We cleared a good stretch of trail. Now a few classes of children just need to be sent cross-country running along it in order to tamp down the soil and deter the weeds.
Blimey, that is quite some land! Have you heard the local furore over the Infants school trying to claim half of Camping Close? The joke (not the ha ha variety) is that the children aren't even allowed to run on the grass. On the rare occasions when the grass is deemed fit to go on, they are limited to a stately walk. And don't get me started about the regime at the Heights!
ReplyDeleteWe're following the Camping Close debate with interest. In Linton that field doubles as our backyard, since our own garden is so tiny. So for mainly selfish, but to a degree public interest reasons the Girl and Boy (and the Man and myself) are not in favour of the Infants nabbing half of it for the sake of the three days a year they'll make use of it. And the "architect's plans" (as seen in Linton News online) look like something from a shopping precinct.
