OK, so it's the third and final Presidential debate tonight. At today's HILL lecture the professor was reluctant to make predictions as to how it would turn out. He graciously admitted having got it wrong for the first debate: he said Obama would win it (he didn't) and that anyway first debates don't have much impact on a campaign (this one did); and he was also wrong on the second debate: he reckoned the "town hall" format would result in the candidates showing restraint (they both looked and sounded like they wanted to punch each other).
As well as trying not to fret over the latest polls, we learnt about campaign financing and the billions spent on political advertising, especially TV commercials. The swing states in particular are being bombarded by these right now. The British system - no political commercials, just equal air time for a modest number of party political broadcasts - would probably been seen as a curtailment of freedom of speech to some here, but people I've mentioned it to think it sounds like a great idea.
...Post-debate analysis: personally I preferred Obama (and he had the best line, about horses and bayonets). But I suspect the Romney-ites thought their man did fine - so everything stays tied. Just two more weeks...
