As well as having the novelty of Walk to School Day yesterday, there has been Farm to You Fest to enjoy all this week. It's a statewide celebration of local farms and produce. In our schools there are activities such as food tastings, and school-grown salad on the lunchtime menu at the Middle School.
All the district's students are being encouraged to bring in fresh fruit and veg to donate to the Squash Hunger campaign (you may remember a large paper carrot I made a couple of years ago as a prop. This year someone else has made a giant pumpkin). My job this time round was just to collect the veg from the Middle School one day and take it to the central collection point in town. Yesterday I duly delivered bags of carrots, squash, home-grown radishes, potatoes, tomatoes...a wholesome haul.
As a finale, on Saturday the Farmers' Market will be the setting for a kids' scavenger hunt... It's all thoughtful fun, and good community-building stuff.
But before that, tomorrow I shall be putting thoughts of outsize carrots and pumpkins aside, and heading out in search of a big apple.
