The three of us (the Girl is still away on Long Island) made a trip this afternoon to the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center at Thompson's Lake. We observed a red squirrel - possibly the same one we saw here at the same time
last year. We were the only visitors, so had the full attention of the Center's friendly staff-member. She answered our questions about bees, told us tales of mink and weasels and identified the bird of prey (a sharp-shinned hawk) that temporarily frightened all the littler birds away from the feeding tables.

One member of our party had been reluctant to return to this excellent place, but even he was soon won over, especially when given the chance to feed the resident turtles.

There's a good deal more snow up around Thacher than where we live (it's getting decidedly patchy in our area), and Thompson's Lake was definitely looking well frozen.
